Cyprus enjoys a healthy furniture manufacturing and retailing industry, both domestically and abroad. The country is increasingly establishing itself as a design hot-house, nurturing fresh talent in various fields, including domestic and industrial furniture. Modern designs co-exist alongside neoclassic and hand-made traditional styles in a variety of materials, from wood to glass, metal and stone.
Natural woods – such as alder wood, birch, cherry, mahogany, oak, pine, walnut and yew – are used extensively, although other "fabrics", such as glass, leather, metal and stone are featuring in more modern designs. Woodworking skills – such as cabinet making, wood finishing, antique furniture restoration, design, veneering, marquetry, wood machining and timber technology – have been passed down from generation to generation and many pieces are still made by hand.
Representing the industry is The Cyprus Furniture & Woodworking Industry Association (PASYVEX), established in 1958. Participating companies have adopted advanced production methods, integrated quality control systems and successful marketing techniques, which have led to the Cyprus furniture industry having an enhanced reputation.
Cyprus furniture exports have increased considerably, mainly owing to the increase in exports in existing foreign markets such as the United Kingdom, Germany and Greece, but also to the penetration of products into new markets such as France, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Lebanon and Qatar.
Cyprus furniture industry is able to satisfy the international clientele by offering a wide range of domestic furniture including the areas of: upholstery, contemporary design, reproduction, wooden and metal furniture, office furniture, mattresses, divans, headboards, indoor and outdoor furniture, etc.
